Therapy is Like Being In The Old Dressing Rooms at Macy’s
I like to help people structure their lives as if they were back in those old-fashioned Macy’s dressing rooms. Remember those? Mirrors all around you—front, back, every angle.
In many ways, childhood was like that too. We were surrounded by “mirrors”—the people who reflected back to us who we were. If we were lucky, those reflections were affirming and kind. But for many of us, some weren't. No one gets out unscathed.
Part of the work now is choosing new “mirrors.” Surrounding ourselves with people who reflect back the truth of who we are—capable, worthy, and whole—and learning to internalize those reflections.
If you’re starting to question the “mirrors” in your life, therapy can be a place to begin that work.
That’s part of what it means to Build the Self.
